What happens when moving a student between classes

Audience: Teachers

When a student changes classes during the school year, you'll add them to their new class. You can choose to leave them enrolled in their original class or remove them, depending on whether they still need access to their previous work.

This article explains what happens to student journals, student access, and teacher access when students move between active classes.

Important: Moving a student to a new class does not move their journal. Student journals stay with the class where they were created. A new journal is created in the new class.

To move a student between active classes:

  1. Add the student to their new class.
  2. Decide whether to keep them enrolled in their original class or remove them.

  • Teachers continue to have access to work in both classes.
If you remove the student from the original class
  • They lose access to that class.
  • They can no longer view or add to their original journal.
  • Their work remains in the class for teachers.
Non-email/Google Student
  • For Seesaw Starter, removing a student means that their account and access to posts will be lost. Notify parents to download their child's work before removal. Parents will not have access to their child's posts after they are removed.
  • For School and district Seesaw subscriptions, when a student is removed from a class, the student will remain on the school dashboard.
