Understanding the CSV rostering template

 The CSV rostering template is a vital part of creating classes via CSV. Included is a breakdown of the required fields as well as recommendations and tips for successfully creating your template. 

You can also find a Field Explanation tab on the Seesaw for Schools Setup Template to help you if you are unsure what information to enter into the template.

ℹ️ Note: Admins are only able to sign in on a computer, not the Seesaw app.

 

Required Information:

  • Teacher email:
    • Enter the Teacher’s email in Column A for every row of that class.
  • Teacher First Name:
    • Enter the Teacher’s first name in Column B for every row of that class.
  • Teacher Last Name:
    • Enter the Teacher’s last name in Column C for every row of that class.
  • Class Name:
    • Enter the Class Name in Column D for every row of that class.
    • Each separate class on the CSV Import needs to have a unique Class Name.
  • Grade Level:
    • Use the dropdown to select a grade level in Column E.
    • Grade Level options are: Pre-K, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Other.
    • Note: Only one grade level can be selected per class, regardless of the actual grade levels using the class. Class grade levels can be adjusted after uploading your CSV, if necessary.
  • Student name:
    • Enter Student names in Column G, one student per row.
  • Student ID:
    • For existing students, use the Student ID you assigned them last year.
    • For new students, assign them a unique ID that will NOT change for their entire career at your school.
    • For best results, we do not recommend using leading zeros in Student IDs.
  • Student email:
    • Required for Email or Google sign-in classes. Not required for Class Code sign-in classes.
  • Student Password:
    • Required for Email sign-in classes. Not required for Google or Class Code sign-in classes.

Class Structure:

How you set up your classes can vary based on student age or grade level. You can find our recommendations below. 

  • For younger students, we recommend:
    • Create one homeroom class for each of your teachers and add specialists as co-teachers. 
  • For older students, we recommend:

    • If teachers or specialists have their own class periods, create individual classes in Seesaw for each of their classes.
    • If specialists visit or push into a homeroom class, add them as co-teachers to that homeroom class.

Sign-in Mode:

Much like class structure, Sign-In Mode can vary based on student age or grade level. We recommend:

  • Younger students usually use Class Code Sign In. Students will log into their class by scanning a unique QR code.
  • Older students usually use Email or Google SSO. If students do not have email addresses, use Class Code Sign In. 
  • Unless set to Email or Google, the imported classes will default to Class Code 1:1. Teachers or Admin can set it to Shared Devices after you import your rosters by following these steps.

Co-Teachers

While not required, you can enter additional or co-teachers in columns K through Z. The co-teacher’s information will need to be included for every row of the class.

  • Each co-teacher will need a first name, last name, and email address.
  • If you do not have additional co-teachers, leave these columns blank.
  • Note: All teachers have the same permissions. This means that co-teachers can also approve, delete, or edit posts, invite and approve family members, and edit the class list.

 

Once you have finalized your CSV template, be sure to save and export your spreadsheet as a .csv. Other file formats are not supported.

NOTE: Please do not re-import the same .csv! If you import the same .csv more than once, you will create duplicate classes. To make changes to existing classes, please use the CSV Bulk Edit Tool.
