Student sign-in modes

3.png Audience: Teachers

Teachers choose whether students sign in to Seesaw by scanning a Student Code or logging in with their email address or SSO (Google, Microsoft, Okta, Classlink, Clever). If your students are using Seesaw at home and don't have an email address or SSO Account, send home the Home Learning Code. Learn how to do this here.

Student sign-in modes can be changed at any time.

  4. Before the student responds to an activity, OR after they a submit a student post, the student will be prompted to tap their name from the list.
  5. When another student uses the same device to add items to their journal, they will select their name from the dropdown.

*If you're concerned about students signing in to the wrong journal, don't post the QR Student Code poster in your classroom. Instead, have students come to you to get the QR code. You can then make sure students pick the correct journal.

Email/SSO Sign In (for Classroom and Home)

Email/SSO sign-is designed for students who can remember their email address and password.

  • If you're using Seesaw Starter, students will type in a Join Code to connect their email address to the class the first time they use Seesaw. Afterward, they'll use their email/password to sign in to Seesaw.
  • If you're using a paid subscription of Seesaw, students can just sign in with their school email address to access all of their classes.

Once students sign in to Seesaw, they stay signed in for up to 1 year.

  1. Open the Seesaw app.
  2. Tap I'm a Student.
  3. If using Seesaw Starter, enter the Class Join code from the teacher and tap Go. Students will then create an account with their email/password or continue with SSO.
  4. If using Seesaw with a paid subscription, students tap Sign In with SSO or type in their school email and password to sign in.

Home Learning Code Student Sign In

Home Learning Codes are an individualized QR code or Text Code that allow students to log into the Seesaw app or at app.seesaw.me at home while protecting student privacy. Students can post to their journal, respond to activities, and view announcements. Students cannot see each other's work. No class setting changes are needed.

Home Learning Codes are different than Student Class Codes. Home Learning Codes are a secure way for students to log in from home. Students should log in from home using the Home Learning Code (if they don't sign in with email/SSO).

Student Class Codes are for students to use when they are working in their classroom. The Class Code should only be used in the physical classroom. To protect student privacy, the Class Code should not be sent home.

As a teacher, in order to access your Home Learning Codes, please follow the steps here!

Steps for students signing in with a Home Learning Code:
  1. Open the Seesaw app.
  2. Tap I'm a Student.
  3. Tap the Scan Code button and scan the Home Learning Code or type in your Home Learning Text Code.

How do I change student sign-in mode?

Student sign in mode can be changed at any time by following the below steps:

1. Tap the Wrench icon.

2. Go to Class Settings.

3. Select your preferred Student Sign in Mode.

How do I combine student journals after I change sign-in mode?

If you switch from Class Code sign in to Email/SSO sign in, you may want to combine student journals so that there are not duplicate students (two separate portfolios for each student). After students join your class, you can combine their existing journal with their new account. After combining student journals, the work and families from the existing student will be associated with the new student.

  1. First, make sure that your class is in Email/SSO mode (you can change this back to QR code after you have merged students).
  2. Tap the wrench icon in the top right corner.
  3. Tap Manage Students.
  4. Select a student.
  5. Tap Combine with other student journal button.
  6. Follow the prompts to combine the two journals.

You can only combine two students within the same class. Students without an email address can only be combined with students with an email address on their account. Combining student journals cannot be undone, so please do this carefully.

Students using Seesaw on a paid subscription can also sign in via Clever. Find out how here!
