Using Free Response assessment

Audience: Teachers with Seesaw Instruction & Insights

Free Response assessment allows teachers to collect open text responses to formative assessment questions from students, autograde those responses, and aggregate response data in reporting. Teachers can choose Short Answer or Open Ended questions. Short Answer questions are automatically graded. Teachers will see actionable reporting at the class and student level, along with a streamlined manual grading workflow.

Correct Responses field with question Who were the first female twins to climb the Seven Summits? Responses are formatted as Tashi Malik and Nungshi Malik, Tashi and Nungshi, and Tashi and Nungshi Malik.

💡If Flexible Spelling is not toggled ON, the correct answer must be an exact match to one of the possible provided answers. Multiple variations of correct answers can be entered in by the teacher. Student spelling errors are not allowed. At this time, we only support auto-grading that is not case-sensitive.

  8. Toggle Flexible Spelling on if you want misspelled responses that are almost correct to be scored as correct.
  9. Click Save and tap Add to add to the canvas.

Student Experience
When students complete their assessment (Short Answer and Open Ended), they can enter text directly in the box. If practice mode is enabled, they will have the ability to check their work (Short Answer, only).

Reporting

Seesaw will auto-grade questions and aggregate poll responses after students respond. Once submitted, teachers will have actionable reports they can review. Teachers can view reporting at the class level or the student level in Progress.

Note: Teachers can make manual changes and updates to autograded work if needed.

Report view detailing several student responses to the math problem What is 9 + 10. Correct responses are 19 as numerals and and the word nineteen. Report includes breakdown of correct vs. incorrect at top, and number of students who did not submit a response.

What happens if an Activity with Free Response assessment is shared with a teacher who doesn't have Seesaw Instruction and Insights?

In this scenario, the Activities sent to a teacher without SI&I can be viewed and assigned, but not edited. Free Response questions will be downgraded to a label for the question and text Frame with no AI or manual grading option.
