Do I need to add a student ID for each student?

The student ID is how we link student data year to year and class to class. If you want portfolios to follow from year to year, you must provide a unique student ID that does NOT change for the student's entire career at your school.

If you've moved over classes from free Seesaw to Seesaw for Schools and want those portfolios to connect, you will need to add a unique student ID for each student who was using the free version of Seesaw. 

Seesaw for Schools Users: If you use Clever to create your classes, you will need to use the SIS_ID as the Student ID in Seesaw. To ensure that your Clever to Seesaw sync updates existing accounts, your student's Seesaw Student ID MUST by the SIS_ID from your SIS/Clever. We can not sync off of any other identifying number in your SIS. 

                   

Admin: How to Add a Student ID for a Student
  1. Sign in to your Seesaw for Schools Admin account at https://app.seesaw.me.
  2. Tap 'Assign Missing Student IDs' in the Admin Tools section. 
  3. Get an export of student IDs from your student information system. (This student ID must NOT change from year to year.) If your school doesn't have an ID scheme, you can use an email address, or generate an ID based on the student's FULL name: 
      • Email address -- Ex:  studentname@schoolname.edu
      • FirstNameLastName -- Ex: JohnSmith
      • FirstInititalLastNameGradYear -- Ex: JSmith2020
  4. Type in or paste a student ID for each missing ID. If the student ID is already in use, you will be able to merge the student accounts together to create a single account.
  5. Use the 'Filter by' option to filter by class if you have a lot of missing IDs and it's easier to do it class by class.
  6. Tap 'Save' to save all of the IDs. 

    Note: Students in Email/Google Classes will not appear in the Missing IDs section. Their Student IDs can be added during your CSV Roster Import for next year.

Admin: How to Merge Two Student Accounts 

For schools who moved existing free Seesaw classes into their school and also created class rosters in Seesaw for Schools OR for students who have multiple journals from different free Seesaw classes, you will need to merge student portfolios into a single ID.

  1. Sign in to your Seesaw for Schools Admin account at https://app.seesaw.me.
  2. Tap 'Assign Missing Student IDs' in the Admin Tools section. 
  3. Get an export of student IDs from your student information system. (This student ID must NOT change from year to year.)
  4. Enter in the missing student IDs using data from your student information system. You can filter this list of students by class using the filter by class menu (top right) if that is simpler.
  5. Tap 'ID in use by StudentName. Click here to merge.'. 
  6. Follow the steps to merge the student into one account. Make sure this information is correct. This cannot be undone.

Teachers: How to Add a Student ID for a Student

Teachers can also add student IDs for the students in their classes if you want to distribute the work of adding IDs to your teachers.  

  1. Sign in to your Seesaw teacher account on the web at: https://app.seesaw.me.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Tap Manage Class.
  4. Tap Manage Students.
  5. Select a student.
  6. Add the student ID in the Student ID field. Hit the <- arrow to save.
