The student ID is how we link student data year to year and class to class. Admins must provide a unique student ID that does NOT change for the student's entire career at your school, if you want portfolios to follow from year to year.
If you've moved over classes from free Seesaw to a paid Seesaw subscription and want those portfolios to connect, you will need to add a unique student ID for each student who was using the free version of Seesaw.
Seesaw for Schools and Seesaw Instruction & Insights customers:
⚠️ If you use Clever to create your classes, you will need to use the SIS_ID number as the Student ID in Seesaw. To ensure that your Clever to Seesaw sync updates existing accounts, your student's Seesaw Student ID MUST match the SIS_ID field in Clever. We cannot sync off of any other identifying number in your SIS. Note: The SIS_ID Field may be a different number than Student Number, please double check this with Clever if you are unsure.
⚠️ If you use ClassLink to create your classes, you will need to use the SourcedID number as the Student ID in Seesaw. To ensure that your ClassLink to Seesaw sync updates existing accounts, your student's Seesaw Student ID MUST match the SourcedID field in ClassLink. We can not sync off of any other identifying number in your SIS. Note: The SourcedID Field may be a different number than Student Number, please double check this with ClassLink if you are unsure.
- Sign in to your Seesaw for Schools Admin account at https://app.seesaw.me.
- Tap Assign Missing Student IDs in the Admin Tools section.
- Get an export of student IDs from your student information system. (⚠️ This student ID must NOT change from year to year.) If your school doesn't have an ID scheme, you can use an email address, or generate an ID based on the student's FULL name:

- Email address -- Ex: studentname@schoolname.edu
- FirstNameLastName -- Ex: JohnSmith
- FirstInititalLastNameGradYear -- Ex: JSmith2020

- Type in or paste a student ID for each missing ID. If the student ID is already in use, you will be able to merge the student accounts together to create a single account.
- Use the Filter by option to filter by class if you have a lot of missing IDs and it's easier to do it class by class.
- Tap Save to save all of the IDs.
Note: Student accounts with an email address will not appear in the Missing IDs section. Their Student IDs can be added during your CSV Roster Import for next year.
Admins can also add or update student IDs via the Bulk Update tool.
- Navigate to the Students tab and tap Add or Edit Students in Bulk.
- From the pop-up window, tap EDIT existing students, then tap Download Current Student Data to get a .csv of your student data.
- Open the .csv. To add or update your Student IDs, you only need the 'Identifier' column, the Name columns, and the 'Student ID' column. Remove all columns and students that you are not updating. Double-check you are assigning the correct ID to the correct student. Assigning the incorrect ID can result in the same ID on multiple student accounts.
- After adding your Student IDs, export the updated .csv.
- Upload the new .csv.
- Review the data you are uploading and confirm that everything looks good before submitting!
For schools who moved existing free Seesaw classes into their school and also created class rosters in Seesaw for Schools OR for students who have multiple journals from different free Seesaw classes, you will need to merge student portfolios into a single ID.
- Sign in to your Seesaw for Schools Admin account at https://app.seesaw.me.
- Tap Assign Missing Student IDs in the Admin Tools section.
- Get an export of student IDs from your student information system. (⚠️ This student ID must NOT change from year to year.)
- Enter in the missing student IDs using data from your student information system. You can filter this list of students by class using the filter by class menu (top right) if that is simpler.
- Tap ID in use by StudentName. Tap here to merge.
- Follow the steps to merge the student into one account. Make sure this information is correct.
🚩This cannot be undone.
You can also merge student accounts from the student tab on the admin dashboard. This option is particularly helpful when students you are trying to merge have an email address or a student ID.
1. Access your admin dashboard.
2. Tap the Students tab.
3. Search the student’s name you wish to merge.
4. Edit both accounts to have identical Student IDs.
5. Once you edit the second account to have an identical Student ID you will be prompted to merge the duplicate accounts.
Teachers can also add student IDs for the students in their classes if you want to distribute the work of adding IDs to your teachers.
- Sign in to your Seesaw teacher account on the web at: https://app.seesaw.me.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage Class.
- Tap Manage Students.
- Select a student.
- Add the student ID in the Student ID field. Hit the <- arrow to save.
