Seesaw and Accessibility Compliance

Seesaw is designed to be a reliable and accessible choice for educators and students in diverse learning environments. Our web and mobile apps support nearly all WCAG technical standards required by Title II of the ADA, the European Accessibility Act (EAA), or other similar accessibility legislation. Educators can also take advantage of the built-in tools on our platform to create accessible instructional material.

Assistive Technology Compatibility

We recommend using Seesaw on Chromebooks or in a web browser in classrooms that rely on assistive technologies. Seesaw works well across iOS, Android, and web for general classroom use. For special education settings that require specialized assistive technologies, please review the VPAT more closely to see if Seesaw is the right fit.

Limitations and Accessible Alternatives

Seesaw’s Accessibility Conformance Report (VPAT) details the remaining criteria on our path to full conformance. We encourage education leaders who are evaluating Seesaw’s alignment with accessibility legislation to review the VPAT and assess whether the alternatives described below meet the needs of the student you serve.

User Generated Content

User generated photos, videos and voice recordings. Images uploaded by users might not have text alternatives, videos might not have closed captions, audio recordings might not have text alternatives because we cannot require young students, many of who are not able to read or write yet, to provide specific alternative text for their photos, closed captions for their videos or text alternatives for their voice recordings.

  1. Generic alt text (ex: Gabbie’s post, contains one video) is provided by Seesaw for all photos, videos, voice recordings.
  2. We offer options for adult users to add additional accessibility supports, like alt text, text captions and closed captions.
  3. The platform also supports adding multiple media types, so that users can upload content that is most accessible to their specific audience.
  4. Please review our Help Center documentation on how to add accessibility support or use our multimedia tools: https://help.seesaw.me/hc/en-us/articles/360047206692-Accessibility-and-Seesaw.
VoiceOver/Talkback Gestures on Creative Canvas

Creative Canvas does not currently support iOS VoiceOver or Android TalkBack gestures. When VoiceOver or TalkBack is enabled, we recommend using an external keyboard as an alternative interaction method.

Dynamic Type

Seesaw app supports larger font sizes (Dynamic type) enabled through the device’s accessibility settings. The app can scale text up to 200% without affecting content or functionality. On iOS, this corresponds to the 7th text size notch. On Android, available font size settings vary by device. Font sizes beyond the app’s supported range may cause layout issues such as overlapping text or horizontal scrolling.

Legacy and Third Party Material

Some legacy professional learning and marketing resources may not fully support accessibility features. If you encounter an accessibility issue, please report it to accessibility@seesaw.me, and we will work to provide an accessible version when possible.

The Community Library includes content created by a diverse community of educators. We provide contributors with guidance on creating accessible content, and we make a best effort to curate activities that meet technical accessibility requirements. However, some activities may need accessibility enhancements. Before assigning an activity from the Community Library, we recommend reviewing it and adding accessibility support to templates or examples using Seesaw’s built-in accessibility tools.

Our Commitment

We are committed to delivering equitable, joyful learning experiences for every student. Our team is dedicated to achieving full WCAG conformance, and we are happy to share our accessibility roadmap upon request. If you observe an issue not listed above, please let us know by emailing accessibility@seesaw.me.
