Reading Fluency Assessment scoring

3.png Audience: Teachers with Seesaw Instruction & Insights

At a high level, Reading Fluency scoring works when a student records themselves reading a teacher-provided passage. The recording is analyzed by AI and compared to the original text. Reports indicate how accurate the student’s reading was by identifying added words, removed words, and calculating WCPM. For more information on Seesaw's use of AI, view our AI Philosophy. Note: Automatic scoring can be manually overridden by the teacher as they listen to the student’s readings.

How does Reading Fluency Assessment Compare to Standard Running Records?

There is a fairly well-established process for scoring reading fluency assessments called Running Records.

While the Reading Fluency Assessment is based on Running Records, it differs slightly to account for the fact that it is not able to make the same judgement calls that teachers are able to make. It provides a Percent Total Correct Words which approximates Accuracy scores in Running Records. Reading Fluency Assessment is designed to provide the teacher with easy and frequent snapshots of class and individual student fluency. Teachers may choose to continue using Running Records in tandem.
