Managing Sitewide Standards and Grading Scales

audience.png Audience: Administrators with School and District subscriptions

District-wide standards allow Admins to choose which standard sets they want teachers in their district to use with Seesaw. Settings get applied to all schools and classes in the district. Standards cannot be altered at the school level or class level. Supported state and national standards include the US, Canada, UK, and Australia.

Teachers use standards-aligned activities to monitor student progress. Teachers can easily search and filter standards by grade-level and subject area when browsing for activities, assign them to their class, and reviewing student work. View the Standards sets that Seesaw supports.

How to select a Standards Set for your district or school

  1. If you are a District Admin, go to District Wide Settings in the District Dashboard, and select Standards and Grading. If you are a School Admin, go to School Settings > Standards and Grading Settings.
  2. Select your preferred Standard Sets from the dropdown.
  3. Additional sets can be selected by selecting + Add Standard Set. The first selected standard set will show as the default selection for teachers when tagging and grading.
  4. Optionally, Admins with Seesaw subscriptions can upload custom standards.
  5. If you cannot locate your standard set, please reach out to your Account Manager.

Select preferred Grading Scale

Admins can choose a 3-star, 4-star, or 5-star grading scale for their school or district.

Updating this setting will recalculate all prior grades for teachers from this school year. To minimize disruption, we do not recommend updating grading scales during the school year.

  1. If you are a District Admin, go to District Wide Settings in the District Dashboard, and select Standards and Grading. If you are a School Admin, go to School Settings > Standards and Grading Settings.

  2. Select a 3 Star Scale, 4 Star Scale, or 5 Star Scale rating model.
  3. Click Save Changes.

What happens when I change the grading scale?

When a district or school changes its grading scale, Seesaw automatically converts prior grades from the current school year to the new scale.

For example, if a school changes from a 4-star grading scale to a 3-star grading scale, previously graded activities are converted to the 3-star scale. Teachers associated with that school or district will see the converted grades when viewing student work.

The Gradebook, Learning Insights dashboard, and data exports also reflect the selected grading scale.

When reviewing student work, teachers see the grading scale selected by their school or district.

How do 3-, 4-, and 5-star grading scales map to traditional grading scales?

The table below shows how standards-based grading scales map to traditional percentage and letter grades.

Standards-Based Grading Scale     Traditional Grading Scale
3 Star 4 Star 5 Star Level of Proficiency Percentage Letter Grade
3 4 5 Exceeding 90–100% A
3 4   Meeting 80–89% B
2 2 3 Approaching 60–79% C
1 1 2 Beginning 40–59% D
    1 Not yet 0–39% E/F

How does the Gradebook display grades?

The Gradebook reflects the grading scale selected for the school or district.

The top-level view displays the score for the most recent attempt. Teachers can hover over a score to see more detail, including scores from other attempts.
