Transfer student journals when moved to a new class in the same school year

In our school district this year students had the choice to be in a virtual academy (online) or in-school.  We had a high number of virtual students and needed to add another teacher and move students to a new teacher/class. I had 7 of my students get moved out to a new class.  When each of the students was added to the new class, their folder of ALL of their work was empty.

We would like the folders to travel WITH the students to their new class. We have online assessments and ongoing work created in Seesaw by the students  that will be lost if we delete the student from their former class.

This will continue to be a problem as at the end of each trimester students have the choice to continue in the virtua; environment OR return to in-school.  So students could move to a new class a few times during this school year.

I have not deleted the students/journals from my class for fear of it being gone forever.  But we also do not want them to get double assignments and have confusion about which class they should be turning work into.

  • I am also looking for the answer to this question as one of our classes is dissolving with students being added to two other classrooms.  Additionally, the current teacher is moving to another school in our district.  I want her carefully curated library of activities to follow her there.  I would really like a FIRST-NEXT-THEN from Seesaw on how to accomplish these tasks without loss of teacher or student work.

  • I haven't heard any response from Seesaw about this.  I am hoping they are working out a way for this to happen.

  • Not yet. I tried asking in another thread as well with no luck.

  • Unfortunately I got some information about this earlier this week when another administrator on our account moved students from the class that was being disbanded into other classes.  I had already come to the (tentative) conclusion that the only way to preserve the data and activities was to create a PDF of each journal before transferring students.  When the transfer was done by someone else, students moved but started again with zero items in their journals.  I believe that their journals could be retrieved with some difficulty from the school account but with far more effort than while in their original class.

I believe the better solution (especially for people who are moving from virtual to face-to-face and back again) would be to simply add the student to the other teacher's class without deleting them from their original class.  This would be similar to the way art-music-PE would look when specialists have their own classrooms.  The original teacher would appear in the choice of classes in the upper right but (since no activities are being assigned) would remain static.  I think this would preserve the entire student portfolio together.

  • I had a student transfer from one class to another.  How do I copy their work from old class to new class?

  • If we can download a pdf of their journal entries, couldn't we then upload it into the new class? When you click the upload button, it states that you can upload one pdf. Has anyone tried this? I will try it now. I want to separate one kindergarten class into an am and pm class.

Ok, I tried this and you can upload a pdf, but it includes a QR code with each activity to scan to see the actual work and interactivity of multipe pages. So, although it is not the same as having the actual journal, it is a way to keep the work, but I would think you would not be able to access if the student is removed from a class. Perhaps if the class was archived? I'd like to know before I do anything more.

  • I also would like the option to automatically transfer students' work when they transfer to a new class.  Yes, we can download their work and re-upload, but this is not a good option for younger grades (ie Kindergarten - 2nd), and it's a lot of work for a single teacher/IT staff to do this for every student.

With the pandemic, several students migrate between in-person and remote learning.  It would be nice to have their work follow them automatically.

  • I would love this feature too! We are a Seesaw School so the student is automatically moved to the new class but the journal doesn't follow the students. This should happen when it is during the same school year. Every day I have 1 or 2 students moving classes due to quarantining, etc.
