Private Comments to Students

Teachers should be able to leave private comments on student work!

I LOVE allowing students to see each other's work, and comment on it too! I think it builds community, which is hard to accomplish during distance learning. However, my district requires me to leave constructive feedback on student work - meaning I need to point out the strengths, and what the student needs to work on. I am worried that students (or parents) will listen to the teacher comments left on other students' work. While parents are at home with their students, they can easily view the full student experience, meaning they can also see other students' work and the comments left for them. The only way that Seesaw currently allows comments to be kept private is if you turn off the class feed completely, so that students can't see each other's work. If I do this, the students will be missing out on so much community-building! However, my principal is not comfortable with me leaving specific feedback that is public to all the students. Please allow teachers to leave private comments for students!

  • This would be incredibly helpful! Please consider adding private messaging to students.

  • I would agree. There are things I would like to say to the student without others being able to read my comments.

  • Yes, please! Our Principal is pushing us to turn off student commenting which would be a real shame especially during remote learning where they are already so disconnected from each other. They get inspiration, confidence and learn how to be good digital citizens by looking at and commenting on each other's work.

I too would like a feature where we can leave a private comment whilst the kids can also comment on student work.

  • I agree. Also, it seems that the comments are also visible when the activity is published to the blog. We need to be able to post publicly without our private teaching remarks being visible to everyone, especially the constructive criticism.

  • 100% agree! Teacher feedback should be private. While there would be times (if we were in person) when I might have students complete a task in front of the class requiring me to give feedback in front of everyone, this is not that situation. I would never make comments giving feedback to a student about how they can improve public. That is between them and me.

  • Add another vote for private comments to allow constructive criticism from teacher to student to be done without the whole class viewing it, PLEASE!

  • I have to weigh in on this as well!

I was so excited to post on my Seesaw blog.  I didn't realize that my teacher comments that I've been leaving on their work will also show on the blog.

Especially as students revise work again and again based off feedback, I really want to show their final product without the comments that led to this final project being visible.

  • Please let me know if Seesaw is considering an option for allowing teacher comments to remain private.  I was having my Distance Learners use Seesaw to post work and I corrected it, and I sent their grade back in the comment section.  I just had a parent email me on how it is not appropriate for everyone to see each others grades. I thought that only the student (and I) could read my comments.   I logged in as a child to see what she what was seeing and found out that is not the case.  I had to shut off the "Share" setting, which is disaapointing, since there are many things the students post that I would like for the others to see.

  • Yes, very much agreed!  Private student comments are needed as immediate feedback is so important to student learning.  However, to do this, turning off the "students can see each others' work' needs to be done to keep individual student data/information private.

I love the ability to have all students see each other's work as that builds community and they can learn from each other.  We are trying to use Seesaw for assessment and feedback purposes.  So on certain activities assigned, it is important to keep the comments private.

In addition, it would be a great option when assigning an activity, to be able to choose share / don't share in the Class Journal feed.

    Thanks,
    Mark

  • I would love to be able to have a way to leave private comments for the kids. Many time when they have turned in an assignment and need to fix something, I will leave a comment on what to fix. I would like to have a way to keep these private so only the kids can see them or have the kids be able to find the comments easier on returned work.
