Locking Size & Shape of moveable pieces

When my kindergarten students are asked to move objects (eg a sorting activity), they sometimes have difficulty not changing its size/shape instead. They are obviously accidentally click/tapping on the corners before dragging. It actually happens to me sometimes too. I cannot find a way to lock an object's size or shape to avoid this happening. The object still needs to be moveable (so the available "lock" feature isn't a solution) •Being able to easily create activities with moveable pieces is one of the key ways Seesaw stands out from its competitors. However, the problem of moving objects being accidentally size/shape changed is a major flaw. ..it seems to be also be a flaw in other competitor platforms-- fixing the problem would put Seesaw way ahead.

This feature has now been added to our 7.6 update

  • I would really like this feature for my first graders. I enjoy creating activities where students can manipulate the objects and pictures they see to show their learning. Sometimes they spend too much time trying to resize something they accidentally changed like a pre-typed word, for example, and lose precious learning moments focusing on it. When I was using the Smart Notebook software they had a lock, unlock, and a lock-allow move option for each object. Maybe just a Lock Sizing option?

  • Even my second graders struggle with this. I had several activities where they were recording and spent over a minute trying to move a piece that kept resizing instead, then gave up and said, "Sorry, Ms. Nelson. I can't get it to work." So maybe have a lock position feature as well as a lock size feature.

  • Yes locking the "aspect" of the shape but letting it be still movable would be amazing! Some of my k's were very interesting work with everything reversed and upside down.

  • This feature would be very helpful to my preschoolers. I use a lot of sorting and matching activities. The little ones are frustrated when the shapes change size and they have a hard time moving them.

  • I had several parents who would have their children just do the activity with a pencil and paper because it got so difficult for their child to manipulate the pieces.  I felt bad that they had to go through that frustration.

  • Same here. Parents would draw out the activity and then submit a picture of it - because they couldn't move the pieces easily without changing the size.

  • Please add this feature!  It would open up so many options!

  • Yes!!! This has been a major issue with creating interactive activities.

  • This would be a game changer for my students!  AND my son with special needs who uses two fingers often on the iPad, and things move and flip and change size almost every time he tries to drag something.

  • Kirsten Phelps - a picture is worth a thousand words.  Images are flipped and turned!

  • Even better would be the ability to choose "lock size" and/or "lock rotation". For a tangram type activity I would like to lock the size, but allow free rotation. For a word or letter sorting activity, I would want to lock the size and the rotation.

  • Yes, I agree that this feature is definitely needed!  Some of my students spend way too much time playing with the pieces (because they can), instead of focusing on the task that needs to be completed.

  • I'd like to second what Ng Lori said, locking size and locking rotation should be separate in an ideal world so teachers can choose how students can manipulate objects.

  • AGREE!   Want to lock shape, size, rotation....but not position on the page.

  • The lack of this feature is currently stopping me from using seesaw way more. Students accidentally changing the size/aspect/orientation of an image is a big problem for me.

  • Yes feature is badly needed!  How do we request it?

  • As I read through these, it appears that we can lock them but if the kids click the three dots, they can manipulate / delete / change things....

  • Yes.  Please!  This is my number 1 request.  I need the kids to move shapes, but not change them.

  • This definitely needs to be changed! My first graders have a really difficult time moving items on the screen without changing the shape and size. Please fix this!

  • Please fix this issue. I am a first grade teacher who loves to use Seesaw in my classroom. My students ALL have difficulty with shapes resizing when moved. This change would rock their world. Please, please, please!

  • An added aspect to this feature would be to lock a text box to prevent it from being re-sized, but still be able to type it it!

  • Agreed! Total nightmare for Kinders! Would make life so much easier!

  • What if we could lock latitude or longitude too so they can only drag something along a line? Creating activities with bead frames (like an abacus), number lines, measurements, sequencing, etc. might be easier. I think increasing as many locking options as possible would take Seesaw to the next level of awesomeness.

  • Thanks to all who previously commented and getting this conversation started! A group of us were just talking about this today at our school. Our second grade students are 1:1 on touchscreen chromebooks for the first time after using ipads in kindergarten and first grade. Between the platform change, glitchy mice, and the dexterity required...YIKES! Please give teachers the option to lock aspect ratios on objects, including text boxes.

  • SAME!  Drives me crazy!  I teach Special Needs Preschool.  The assignments come back in all forms of wonky and messed up!  I used Smart Board programming software for years to make activities and their software had the capacity to lock shape, but leave it moveable.  It was SOOOO helpful.  PLEASE make this a priority Seesaw!

  • My preschool team was just talking about needing this feature.  Having a lockable/moveable piece would be sooooo helpful. We are hearing from many parents that our youngest learners are getting frustrated over the pieces changing size on them. Please help with this!
