Messages to and from students individually

My second graders don't have email or phones or any other way for me to contact them directly during remote learning, which will be continued as part of our model this year. We need a way to message students directly that is not a comment on their post, which other students may see (I keep the setting open for students to see each other's work so they can learn from it, comment to each other, and have social connection as well, especially through community connection assignments). It could be visible to parents, but accessible by students so they will see if their teacher sent them a message and be able to respond either in text or voice recording. Sometimes students want to contact me to ask for help with an activity but they don't have a way to do that either. This feature is a MUST!

  • I have requested the same feature. Keeping my fingers crossed that this becomes a new feature. Having the ability to send a message to an individual student would be a game changer.

  • I would love the feature where I can send personal messages to students on their posts. Sometimes I want to give more specific feedback on a post but would rather not have the entire class view it. For example, when I hit the Send Back button and give feedback on what I'd like them to improve. Right now I put it in the comments, then when they post it to the journal a second time I go back in and delete my feedback comment.

If there was a way to message a student individually (similarly to how a parent using the family app can) I would use that often, especially if it still had the voice recording option!

  • This feature is really essential for remote learning. Granted, younger students will need their parents' support, and individual messaging with parents is working, but the goal is to create as much independence as possible for students during remote learning, without the need to ask for parent help. Seesaw has been so good about allowing voice messaging, it would be totally amazing if students could message their teacher using text or voice recording to get help independently.

  • I am the EdTech at my school, and the #1 challenge teachers faced with Seesaw was not having a quick and easy way to communicate with individual students. They would use the comment and voice features to give feedback on activities, but would never know if the student actually read/listened to it, as it becomes part of the never ending feed of activities.

This form of communication is crucial in remote learning, particularly with the youngest students K-2 where we don't want to have to use something like GMAIL. They are still learning to read and write, so that is not conducive to this age group. Individual messages with video, voice, and text would be super beneficial!

  • My school loves Seesaw but is currently strongly considering moving to a different platform because teacher and students cannot directly message each other. Students need to be able to independently ask for help from their teacher and get feedback, especially now with distance/home-based learning being the new COVID-19 norm.

I really hope Seesaw can roll this feature out very soon!

  • This is also a feature that teachers at my school have been requesting. As a Seesaw ambassador, I do a lot of training and at almost every PD teachers ask if this is possible. PLEASE add this feature!!

  • This is always a feature that I thought would improve Seesaw communication.  It is really difficult for students to reach out to me (especially in the younger grades) and I think this would be a great way to offer individualized help to students.  I always have teachers asking me why this is not a feature!

  • This feature needs to be added. This might be a deal breaker for my teachers and inhibit our school from purchasing SeeSaw.

  • I agree with the other comments.  We are considering Seesaw for our school, but it would be a deal breaker if teachers can't communicate with individual students.  I'm surprised this feature is not  available as Seesaw is amazing in so many other ways.

  • Agree! Please give teachers a way to communicate directly with individual students and let them communicate directly with their teacher.

  • Yes, this is a much needed feature for Seesaw! All my teachers have been coming and asking how they can do this in Seesaw.

Please add this as an option!

  • As a parent with 2 kids on SeeSaw for virtual learning, I agree to all of your comments. The inability for students to communicate with teacher is beyond frustrating. Our kids are doing school work and we're (luckily) working from home. We are frequently losing focus on our own work so we can submit the question for our child and then it happens again when we have to share the responses back. In addition, we aren't doing the schoolwork with our kids, so interpreting the question and response is oftentimes an added difficulty. Teachers don't see the question in a timely fashion or we don't get to share the answer with our kiddo before the teacher has moved on. SeeSaw - I BEG of you - please add this feature. If you have plans, do you have an anticipated release date?

  • YES!! This is a necessary feature!  I would rather they use Seesaw to communicate with me than go through their email account.  They will see any messages from me when they login to do assignments - then they don't have to remember to sign on to their email also.

  • This is a major problem with the Seesaw platform. When I first began using Seesaw, I messaged customer support asking where this feature was. The utter and complete lack of a response told me all I needed to know. There isn't one! The inability of teachers and students to instant message one another is ridiculous. K-3 teachers NEED this. How hard can it be to add that? Unless Seesaw adds this feature, I will advocate for our school and district to look at other platforms once our subscription is up. Seesaw, are you listening?

  • I think I found a way around this for the time being. You can create an assignment and assign it to only one student then record yourself or type in the message letting them know it is actually a message not an assignment. This can't be done though in other formats like announcements etc.. Hope this helps.

  • This is definitely needed!  I have 22 classes.  My youngest students do not have email access.  I need to follow up individually with students!  This is a must-needed feature for remote learning!

  • I agree with all of the above comments. The ability to message individual students would greatly improve Seesaw's functionality.

  • We need to be able to send individual messages to our students because our K-2nd is using Seesaw and not classlinks and google docs.  I send all my zoom posts to all the students through Seesaw and they access all the whole class Zoom meetings safely and  independently. It would be nice to be able to send a zoom link through individual student's Seesaw inbox.  At the same time, sending a Zoom link to a small group of student's would be equally great so that I don't have other students trying to crash the Zoom meeting.

  • Some of my students are joining later (I'm in a middle school) or I need to send them a reminder and there's no way to do this in SeeSaw, unless sending to the whole class.

  • I would LOVE to be able to personally message my students. Remote learning is SO PUBLIC - there are no chances for me to individually interact with students without involving their parents. Gmail isn't great for younger learners. PLEASE set up this feature!

  • As a parent (and a former elementary classroom teacher) I believe the biggest puzzle piece missing from remote learning is the ability for students to "raise their hand" to get support as they are working. A way to DM or IM the teacher would be fantastic. Another option, especially for the upper elementary grades would be a Message Board of some kind (think of the way the message boards work in the Blackboard program). This way the students could also ask peer-to-peer questions like they might in the in-person classroom; students can answer each other and/or the teacher can chime in.

  • We were so close to buying this but without individual messaging we will have to look elsewhere. Will look again if things change.

  • If this feature is adopted, please also provide an option for teachers to be notified by email that they have received a message from a student. This way a teacher can know about a message without having to be constantly checking Seesaw all day.

Even better would be the ability to respond to that message directly within the email, much like you can do with comments on Google Docs:

  • I'd love to be able to send a message to a group of students - and a group of parents.

For example - a sport team or a quiz team.

    Thank you!

  • This tread is almost coming to a year, hopefully that this function will be added to Seesaw.

Inbox/Message function is very important and crucial in times of lock down. We as an educator does not want to be disturb during our time off, and I believe the parents feels the same too. Teachers will be able to send message to a specific students rather than to the whole class which might not be related to other students.

I urge SEESAW to see this function as their utmost priority,
