Ability to log in as sample student

It would be helpful if we could log in as the sample student to see how things look from their perspective. Right now if there's a problem or if I'm unsure of how students or families will access something, I have to log in as a student. I suppose a workaround would be to add a new test student to the class, but the sample student is automatically part of every class.

  • You can add yourself as a student in your class. I've done that for the past 5 years. I also invite myself from a personal email as a parent to view it. It's great!

  • Yes, that's what I've done as well, Robin. But rather than each teacher having to make their own account, since the Sample Student is already there, it would be nice for you to be able to access Seesaw from that point of view or that of the student's parent. Many other online platforms allow you to switch between views on the fly, which would be very helpful and a huge time saver in this situation.

  • It would be really useful to be able to log in as sample student to demo things for the children as their sign in, particularly for activities looks different to the teacher sign in.  At the moment I'm having to borrow a child's sign in to show how to navigate in activities between to do, drafts etc and then delete what I've done so it doesn't get added to their journal.

It would also be useful to be signed in as sample student when creating help videos for students and parents for remote learning.

We have Seesaw for Schools so we can't create an extra student for each class as this would take us well over our subscription limit.

  • Hi Claire,

What I do is just go to my activities and click on "Add Response" then, it lets me choose my "sample student" and use that account to sample the activity. This is how I've been modeling to my classes each activity, or making the video tutorials.

  • Yes that’s true but sometimes I need to show things from the students point of view. Like how to find an activity or how to use new features like the calendar. It would be so much easier to be able to sign in as a sample student than to have to ask a student to use their account to share their view.

  • I just tried doing this but I got blocked because I don't have a student ID to enter. I emailed my IT dept. to see if they could provide me with a dummy student ID for this purpose. Fingers crossed.

  • Since I use Google Chrome with Profiles enabled, I use my District Google account as a Teacher to manage my classes.

If I want to demonstrate as a student, I just switch to my 2nd Google Profile (non-District email) and add myself as a student to all my classes using the class code.

  • Hi I’m a teacher and I added myself as a student to my class.  None of my students have joined the class yet.  But I noticed that when a list of my class came up, I could click on anyone of them to join.  Has anyone else noticed this and is this normal?  I definitely don’t want another student doing another students work for them and submitting it on their behalf

  • Hi Denton- This is expected behavior for classes with the sign in mode being Class Code (1:1 they pick their name in the beginning, Shared Device they pick it when submitting work). If you do not want students selecting their name from a list, the sign in mode either needs to be set to Email/Google, or you can issue your students Home Learning Codes that are specific to their own account.
