How do I transition from Free Seesaw to Seesaw for Schools?

If teachers in your school are using the free version of Seesaw, you can move their accounts into your Seesaw for Schools account.

Step 1: Approve pending join requests from reachers with existing accounts

Teachers who use Seesaw can indicate what school they work at. We will automatically pair them with your school, where you will be able to approve their connection. Teachers are never added to your school without your approval.


  1. Sign in to your Seesaw for Schools admin account at:
  2. On the Overview tab, if there are teachers who have indicated in their Account Settings that they are part of your school and the email address they used for their account matches the valid email domains for your school, you will see a banner: "Teachers want to join your school".
  3. Click on the View and Approve button.
  4. View the list and accept teachers who are part of your school.
  5. Follow the prompts to move these teacher accounts, along with all of classes and students, into your school.
Step 2: Add remaining teachers with existing accounts

Some teachers might not have indicated that they are part of your school when they created their accounts. That is OK! You can still add their accounts to your school.

  1. Sign in to your Seesaw for Schools admin account at:
  2. Click on the Teachers tab.
  3. Click on the Add Teachers to School button.
  4. Paste your full certified staff email list (one email address per line) into the text area. We only need teacher email addresses. We’ll check to see if your teachers have a Seesaw account and if they do, we’ll move their account, classes, and students over to your school.
  5. Follow the prompts to finish moving teachers’ accounts over to your school.

If a teacher created their account using a personal email address, ask them to change the email address on their account in Account Settings to use a school email address, and then move them to your school.

Step 3: Add a unique student ID for each ‘free’ student

If you want your student portfolios from free Seesaw to be linked with their portfolio in Seesaw for Schools, you will need to associate their unique student ID with the data in their free account. It is simplest to add student IDs before importing class rosters for the new school year.

  1. Sign in to your Seesaw for Schools admin account at:
  2. Click on Assign Missing Student IDs link in the Admin Tools section.
  3. Type in or paste a student ID for each missing ID. If the student ID is already in use, you will be able to merge the student accounts together to create a single account.
    • If your school doesn't have an ID scheme, you can use an email address, or generate an ID based on the student's FULL name.
      • Email address -- Ex:
      • FirstNameLastName -- Ex: zacklinson
      • FirstInititalLastNameGradYear -- Ex: zlinson19

4. Use the "Filter by" option to filter by class if you have a lot of missing IDs and it's easier to do it class by class.


Step 4: Use roster import to create new classes

For any new classes you want to create (for teachers who did not use the free version of Seesaw), create those using the Seesaw roster import process or Clever roster sync.
