Why can't my student see their journal?

If your students can sign in to Seesaw, but cannot see their journal here's what might be going on.

If your class is set to Shared Device Sign in and the "Students can see each other's work" setting is OFF, students will only be able to add items, not view any journals. This is because we don't know which student is signed in (since everyone shares the same sign in) and therefore do not know which journal to show.

If you want students to be able to see journals, you have two options:

  1. Turn 'Students can see each other's work" back to ON - and then students can see their work (and other journals in your class).
  2. Change your sign in mode to be "1:1 Device Sign In". In this mode, students will scan the QR code and then pick their name from the class list. Then they will stay signed in as that student and can view the journal of the signed-in student, even if you leave the 'students can see each others work setting" OFF.

Changing either of these settings will sign out your students. They will need to sign back into Seesaw using the QR code and then the new settings will take effect.

If you want students to see some posts made by their classmates, but not all, here are two options.
Option 1: Use a Class Blog for Collaborative Projects
  1. In the Manage Class Menu, turn the "students can see each other's work" setting to OFF.
  2. Then scroll down and turn Enable Blog ON.
  3. Create a class blog for your class. You can also password-protect the blog if you don't want it public online. Watch the video!
  4. Once you have the blog set up, you (and your students with your approval) can post work from their Seesaw journals onto the Class Blog that you want to open up for discussion. Just tap the globe icon below any item to add it to the blog. Students in your class can always view your class blog, and then can leave comments on each others' work, regardless of what your 'students can see each other's work' setting is set to.
Option 2: Print the Seesaw Post QR Codes
  1. In the Manage Class Menu, turn the "students can see each other's work" setting to OFF.
  2. Print out or project the QR codes for posts you want to students to view and discuss from the [...] menu below the post. Tap [...] and choose Get QR Code or Print option. Learn how to get QR codes!
  3. Share those QR codes with your students. You can project them on the board or print them out.
  4. Students should sign into your Seesaw class. Then they can tap on their profile icon (top left), then tap on the QR code icon in the top menu. They will scan the post QR code in Seesaw, and will be able to view only that post and leave a text or voice comment.
